What is Bowen Therapy?

Bowen is a most effective, non-invasive form of bodywork therapy. The therapist makes a precise series of gentle moves over connective tissue (muscles and ligaments) with thumbs and fingers. The touch is light, not manipulative, and is suitable for anyone. If preferred, Bowen can be performed through light clothing.

How does Bowen work?
Research shows that from the very first Bowen moves, the body and mind relax almost into sleep. This depth of relaxation allows the body to respond to the brain’s command to search for imbalances in the system and make the necessary adjustments to correct disorders. The moves also relieve pain, release energy, reduce tension, increase blood supply, improve lymphatic drainage, release toxins and so much more [see case studies of my clients]. Read more about the origins of Bowen therapy here.

How many treatments are required?
This varies from person to person. However, I recommend that a client commits to 3 sessions, 5 to 10 days apart. It will then be clear how well Bowen is working for you. Invariably people experience a very positive result very quickly.

Will the effects last?
Bowen’s ‘Ace Card’ is that conditions successfully treated will usually not return unless re-injury occurs. Rapid and longlasting results are common and many conditions that have failed to respond to other treatments are found to respond very well to Bowen.

What happens at the initial consultation?
During the initial consultation I will ask you some general questions about your health background and enquire about the condition that has brought you to Bowen. You will be asked for details of any medication you’re taking.

How long will a Bowen session take?
The initial consultation, which comprises taking a case history, varies but is usually around 90 minutes. Depending on the needs of the individual, subsequent Bowen sessions can last up to an hour.

What about medication?
A Bowen therapist will never change, reduce or recommend that you stop taking medication that has been prescribed for you by your doctor. You will always be referred back to your doctor for advice on this matter. However, at the end of each session you will be asked to drink a glass of water. You will also be advised to drink at least 5 glasses of water a day throughout the following week. This helps with the metabolization of Bowen and also aids the detoxification process it initializes.

Can I mix therapies?
Other therapies can interfere with the potential benefits of Bowen therapy, so I ask in your own interest that during the time you are having Bowen, you refrain from mixing therapies.

Will a Bowen therapist diagnose my condition?
Bowen is not a diagnostic therapy. Your GP will diagnose, your Bowen therapist will not.

How much does it cost?
Consultation is free. Treatment is £60.

How much notice do I need to give to cancel?
The full fee will be charged for cancellations within 24 hrs of an appointment.
