Already massive in Australia where it originated, the Bowen Technique has now taken the sporting world of America by storm. Studies show that Bowen therapy consistently facilitates greatly enhanced performances in athletes of all disciplines. Like nothing else, Bowen rapidly releases surface and deep-seated tensions that diminish the body’s ability to deflect torsional forces and punishing blows. This improves co-ordination, increases stamina and reduces vulnerability to injury.
At one football club, all players received a weekly Bowen treatment. Historically, the club had suffered an average of 7-8 hamstring injuries each season, yet after regular Bowen sessions were introduced, they didn't have any all season.
Bowen therapy accelerates recovery and is one of the world's first treatments to have immediate results with acute sports injuries untouchable by other modalities. Renowned Sports Therapist Craig Mattimoe sums it up: “After 15 years of treating and preventing athletic injuries, I can confidently report that no other broad-based modality in all of North America comes close to Bowen. Nothing else compares. I work mostly with athletes, particularly football players, who are big business in America, and Bowen literally outshines all of the current accepted sports techniques, both traditional and alternative.”
“The Bowen Technique helps break records in golf and prevents, as well as treats, golf-related injuries.” Dr. Jo Anne Whitaker
What is the Bowen Technique?
Bowen is a most effective non-invasive form of bodywork therapy, consisting of precise moves over muscles, tendons and ligaments. There is no manipulation of bones or hard or prolonged pressure. Its capacity to achieve rapid, long-lasting results is remarkable. It can bring immediate pain relief, quickly release tension, boost energy, improve mobility and co-ordination, and balance the autonomic nervous system.
The Bowen Technique works differently in that it treats the whole body. Chiropractic treatment, for example, treats the spine only. While this may give temporary relief, manipulation can fail because the spine can be ‘pulled back’ into its originally misaligned state, especially with long term injuries.
Bowen therapy helps the body to make its own adjustments to achieve relief that is rapid, long-lasting and without side effects. Muscles in spasm can be eased by body or sports massage but, unlike Bowen, numerous treatments may be necessary before tension and pain are dissipated.
Physiotherapy is rehabilitation through exercise for physical disorders and can take many months of sessions for the treatment to start showing results. Bowen therapy has had great success with traditionally physiotherapy-treated sporting injuries. Even in very serious or acute conditions where an injury has just occurred, it is being used with unprecedented results. Without doubt, the Bowen Technique is proving an essential addition and complement to the care of any sportsperson or team that aims for improved results all round.
“I'd only scored 5 goals in 27 games before Bowen treatment. From starting treatment until the end of the season, I scored 10 in 12. In my view, that says it all! I also didn't miss a game through injury." Footballer

FOOTBALLER – Back/Groin/Hamstring pain (Male 27; 3 treatments)
Danny was asked to try Bowen therapy by his football physio as he had been having recurring problems with his back, groin and upper leg muscles for most of the season. A chiropractor advised there was nothing really wrong with his bone structure. Danny had only scored 5 goals in 27 games before Bowen treatment. From starting treatment until the end of the season, he scored 10 in 12. “In my view, that says it all! I also didn’t miss a game through injury.”
RUGBY PLAYER – Twisted knee. (Male 30; 2 treatments)
A badly twisted knee in a rugby game put Dave off the field. He received immediate Bowen treatment and within days felt good enough to try running again. However, it was still painful, so a week later he received a second Bowen treatment. Following this he was able to return to competition rugby.
CRICKETER – Cartilage/Ligament damage (Male 23; 4 treatments)
H’s left leg was in plaster following cartilage removal and damage to the AC ligament. His right leg was in plaster nearly to the knee due to further ligament problems and he was on anti-inflammatory tablets. Amazingly, after just 4 Bowen treatments, the hospital verdict was that the knees were now very stable and that the anticipated operation would no longer be necessary.
CANOEIST – Shoulder injury (Female 33; 1 treatment).
N had suffered loss of mobility in one shoulder after a canoe rolling accident seven years previously. Having received no response from physiotherapy, N was told that Bowen is known to be exceptional at treating shoulder problems. After only one treatment she was able, for the first time in seven years, to raise her arm fully vertical.
GOLFER – Back pain (Male 28; 1 treatment)
D had been a keen golfer but was suffering severe back pain. He could not stand for longer than 2 minutes at a time, and certainly could not play. He met a Bowen practitioner at a dinner some distance from his home so could only have one treatment. Four months later he wrote to the practitioner to say: “Since my treatment I have had little or no pain. I am playing golf regularly again, swinging freely and without inhibition and my handicap is down to one again... I put my recovery down to Bowen.”
